Star Wars fans are well aware of the many ideas that have not worked in Episode I – The Phantom Menace. But two details in particular are hated by virtually everyone who loves the universe created by George Lucas, and both have to do with the space granted to two characters: too much to the annoying Jar Jar Binks; too little to Darth Maul, the iconic Sith carrying the double-bladed lightsaber.
But fans themselves have restored the balance in the Force. If the unbearable Gungan was edited out or killed in many ways in a wide range of online digital manipulations, the character who stabbed Qui-Gon Jinn to death found his space in other stories and media products in the series, and now has become the protagonist of a non-profit fan film.
Written, produced, directed and edited by Shawn Bu, Darth Maul: Apprentice explores the training of the Sith affiliated to the Death Watch. The short is available here, complete with a making of. It is the outcome of two years of work by the team at T7 Production, founded by Bu and Vi-Dan Tran (who takes care of the choreography of the fan film) and whose declared goal is to create audiovisual content with “Hollywood quality in Germany”.

I fan di Star Wars sanno bene che ci sono diversi aspetti che non hanno funzionato in La minaccia fantasma. Ma ci sono due dettagli in particolare che non sono andati giù praticamente a nessun amante dell’universo creato da George Lucas, ed entrambi hanno a che fare con lo spazio concesso a due personaggi: troppo all’odiato e insopportabile Jar Jar Binks; troppo poco a Darth Maul, l’iconico Sith dalla doppia spada laser.
Come spesso succede, sono stati proprio i fan a rimettere ordine nella Forza. Se l’insopportabile Gungan è stato fatto fuori in molteplici modi in varie manipolazioni digitali online, il responsabile della morte di Qui-Gon Jinn ha trovato prima spazio in altre storie e prodotti mediali della saga, per poi diventare protagonista di un recente cortometraggio non-profit.
Scritto, prodotto, diretto e montato da Shawn Bu, Darth Maul: Apprentice esplora l’addestramento del Sith affiliato alla Ronda della Morte. Il corto è disponibile qui, con tanto di making of, ed è il risultato di due anni di lavoro di T7 Production, casa di produzione fondata dallo stesso Bu e Vi-Dan Tran (che qui si occupa delle coreografie) con l’ambizione dichiarata di “creare prodotti audiovisivi di stampo hollywoodiano in Germania”.
