It is very easy to get used to beauty. Being awakened by the sound of the sea; seeing freshly caught octopuses hanging in the wind in front of the restaurants on the waterfront; walking in the bottom of a volcano… All these things become normal after a few days. This is also part of the intensity of creative experiences such as the Script 2 Film Workshops, the advanced training program for the development of European and international feature films run by the Mediterranean Film Institute.
In the past few days I had the opportunity to take part in the first session of this initiative, which was held from 22 June to 4 July on the Greek island of Nisyros. I reached other consultants from all over the world and joined the participants as a trainer to focus on art-house films and audiences. As per my usual format, I first worked with two teams in a workshop behind closed doors on June 29. Then, on 1 July, I held a masterclass titled Connecting Stories: From Scripts to Audiences – Two Case Studies From the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops, which was open to European writers, directors and producers.
The two projects, from Greece and Turkey, were both at the stage of script development and could not be more different from each other. Peter and the Wolf, written by Panayiotis Christopoulos and Thanasis Neofotistos for Argonauts Productions, revolves around the exploration of a world dominated by the power of fairy tales, in which a young protagonist tries to find his own space within a community threatened by a mysterious entity. The Disappeared, written by Hakan Bicakci and Ramin Matin for Giyotin Film and Beatrice Films, deals instead with the relationship between men and women within a patriarchal society in which, suddenly and for unknown reasons, the male presence literally begins to disappear, giving birth to a “female renaissance”.
Along with the two teams I went through the strengths of their stories and core themes under the light of promotion, discussed how to deal with weaknesses, created “personas” (portraits of potential viewers) and worked on some creative ideas for marketing and audience engagement.
As usual, what I bring home from experiences like this is the wealth of diverse perspectives, passion and creative approaches… A true blessing, especially in times of Brexit! While the teams return home and prepare for the online sessions, I just want to wish them good luck to all the projects for the upcoming phases of development, especially for the second “residence” on the island of Samos in October. La mia settimana ai workshop Script 2 Film a Nisyros
Ci si abitua presto alla bellezza. Si fa l’abitudine all’essere svegliati dal rumore del mare. A vedere polpi appena pescati stesi al vento di fronte ai ristoranti sul lungomare. Persino passeggiare in un vulcano può diventare normale. Anche questo fa parte dell’intensità di esperienze ad alto tasso di creatività come gli Script 2 Film Workshops, il programma di training avanzato per lo sviluppo di lungometraggi organizzato dal Mediterranean Film Institute.
Nei giorni scorsi ho avuto la possibilità di prendere parte alla prima sessione che si è tenuta dal 22 giugno al 4 luglio sull’isola greca di Nisyros, dove ho raggiunto i partecipanti in veste di trainer per quanto riguarda cinema art-house e pubblico. In quello che è diventato un format ormai familiare, ho lavorato con due team in un workshop a porte chiuse il 29 giugno, per poi tenere una masterclass aperta a sceneggiatori, produttori e consulenti dell’industria cinematografica europea il 1 luglio.
I due progetti che ho scelto, uno greco e l’altro turco, sono entrambi allo stadio di sviluppo della sceneggiatura e non potevano essere più diversi tra loro. Peter and the Wolf, scritto da Panayiotis Christopoulos e Thanasis Neofotistos (che ne curerà anche la regia per la casa di produzione Argonauts Productions), è l’esplorazione di un mondo dominato dal potere delle fiabe, in cui il giovane protagonista tenta di trovare il proprio spazio all’interno di una comunità minacciata da un’entità misteriosa. The Disappeared, scritto da Hakan Biçakci e Ramin Matin, che lo dirigerà per Giyotin Film e Beatrice Films, affronta invece la relazione tra uomini e donne nell’ambito di una società patriarcale in cui, all’improvviso e per ragioni sconosciute, le presenze maschili cominciano letteralmente a svanire.
Con i due team ho discusso dei punti forza delle loro storie e di come sfruttare i temi presenti nella narrazione in ottica promozionale; di come affrontarne le debolezze; abbiamo creato ritratti di potenziali spettatori e lavorato su alcune idee creative per marketing ed audience engagement.
Come al solito, quello che porto a casa da esperienze come questa è la ricchezza della diversità di prospettive, passione, approcci creativi… Mica poco, in tempi di Brexit! Mentre i team ritornano a casa e si preparano alle sessioni online, non mi resta che augurare un enorme in bocca al lupo a tutti i progetti in vista delle prossime fasi di sviluppo della sceneggiatura, tra cui la seconda “residenza” sull’isola di Samo in ottobre. Spero di vedere le vostre storie diventare presto film!
